About
I publish mainly on anglophone travel writing, a subject I have been researching since the late 1980s. Among current and ongoing projects, I am completing 'The Cambridge Introduction to Travel Writing' and I continue to edit 'Studies in Travel Writing', the journal I founded in 1997 (now published four times a year by Taylor & Francis). I am also working with Charles Forsdick on a multi-volume anthology of travel writing criticism for Routledge. With Peter Hulme I edit the monograph series, Routledge Research in Travel Writing, and I am President of the International Society for Travel Writing.
Away from travel writing (but still sometimes overlapping with it) I have teaching and research interests in many areas of post-1800 US and English Literature, including, though by no means limited to, African American Writing, late nineteenth-century realism and naturalism, modernism, and postcolonialism. I am completing a book on transformations in late nineteenth-century English Literature for Liverpool University Press.
